ABOUT
Uche Eucharia Ngozi (born 18 June 1973 in Mbaise, Imo State, Nigeria) is a former Nigerian football player and a former head coach of the Nigeria women’s national football team. She is First Degree holder in Business Administration from the Delta State University (DELSU) Abraka. Growing up in Owerri, Nigeria, she made significant history in football. She became the first female assistant coach and subsequently the first female head coach of Nigeria’s national women’s team. Currently, Uche serves as an instructor for both FIFA and the Confederation of African Football.
BEFORE FAME
Uche’s educational journey started at Egbu Girls Secondary School in Owerri, where she discovered her passion for football. Upon completing her secondary education, she studied Physical and Health Education before continuing her academic pursuits at Delta State University.
CAREER
During her playing career, Uche showcased her talent with teams like Bendel Striking Queens (now Edo Queens), Rivers Angels, and Ufuoma Babes (now Delta Queens). She also represented the Nigerian National Team, the Super Falcons, making remarkable achievements. Notably, she became the first African female to be named Top Scorer in an international match and the first Nigerian female to score an international hat-trick during a match against Ghana in 1999.
Transitioning from player to coach, she made history again by becoming the first female coach of the Nigerian National Team. Under her leadership, the team achieved significant success, with Uche earning the title of being the first woman coach to win an African Women’s Championship title in 2010. However, her tenure ended in October 2011 when Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics, leading to her dismissal.
