ABOUT

Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, born June 9, 1980, known professionally as D’banj, is a Nigerian singer, rapper, and TV personality. His stage name is a mix of his first name, Dapo, and surname, Oyebanjo. He co-founded Mo’ Hits Records with producer Don Jazzy. D’banj gained fame for his hit “Oliver Twist,” a mix of Afrobeats and electronic dance music that topped African charts in 2011.

BEFORE FAME

D’banj’s parents hoped he would follow in his father’s footsteps and join the military. However, he turned to music instead, inspired by his late older brother, Femi Oyebanjo, who introduced him to the harmonica before tragically passing away in a plane crash at the age of seventeen. D’banj’s struggle for his parents’ approval significantly influenced his music, particularly the track “All Da Way” from his debut album.

CAREER

D’banj’s music career began with his debut album “No Long Thing” in 2005, featuring the hit single “Tongolo.” His second album, “Rundown Funk U Up,” followed in 2006 with popular tracks like “Tongolo (Remix)” and “Why Me?” In 2007, he released the album “Curriculum Vitae” with Mo’Hits Allstars, which included artists like Dr SID, Wande Coal, KaySwitch, and D’Prince. His third album, “The Entertainer,” came out in 2008 with singles such as “Gbono Feli Feli” and “Entertainer.”

In June 2011, D’banj signed with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label but parted ways in September 2016. Following the breakup of Mo’Hits, D’banj founded DB Records, signing his younger brother Kayswitch and producers Jaysleek and Deevee. In December 2012, he secured a multi-album deal with Sony Music’s RCA Records and a management deal with ROCKSTAR4000.

In 2014, D’banj released the single “Bother You,” inspired by the film “Half of a Yellow Sun.” He introduced new artists under his label, including Kay Switch, MossKriss, Ralph Kriss, Tonto Dikeh, and Ebeneztizzy. In 2017, he released the album “King Don Come,” featuring artists like Gucci Mane and Wande Coal.

D’banj has performed at various high-profile events, including the Hackney Weekend for the 2012 Summer Olympics, AFCON 2013 closing ceremony, and Global Citizen Earth Day in 2015.

FAMILY LIFE

D’banj, also known as the Kokomaster or Bangalee, was born in Zaria, Nigeria, to a military officer father and a devoutly religious businesswoman mother from Shagamu, Ogun State. Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo Dbanj’s birthday date is 9 June. He has twin siblings, Taiwo and Kehinde Oyebanjo. D’banj married Lineo Didi Kilgrow in June 2016. They welcomed their son, Daniel Oyebanjo III, in May 2017. Tragically, their son drowned in June 2018.

In June 2020, D’banj faced allegations of rape from Seyitan Babatayo, who accused him of raping her in 2018. Babatayo later went missing for two days and claimed she was coerced into retracting her accusations by D’banj’s management team. D’banj denied the allegations, calling them false. The situation culminated in a legal battle, with D’banj suing Babatayo for N1.5 billion.

D’banj was also arrested by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on 7 December 2022 in connection with alleged fraud.

ASSOCIATED WITH

D’banj is associated with Mo’Hits records. He has won numerous music awards, including Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007 and Artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2009. His song “Oliver Twist” was a chart-topper in Africa and reached No. 2 on the UK R&B chart.

He has secured various endorsements, including deals with Power Fist, Globacom, Beats by Dre, and Ciroc Nigeria. D’banj is also known for his humanitarian work, founding the Koko Foundation for Youth and Peace Development and serving as Nigeria’s first United Nations Youth Ambassador for Peace. He has been commended by the World Bank for using his music to raise awareness about poverty and related issues, and he launched THE CREAM PLATFORM to discover young creative talents across Nigeria.
