ABOUT
Haruna Abubakar (born 6 June 1952 – died 27 February 2005) was a Nigerian lawyer and politician. He is a native of Kanem-Bornu and popularly called (Dan Iyan Lafia). In 1999, he served as the deputy president of the Nigerian Senate. He was born in Lafia, Nasarawa State. Haruna attended LEA primary and secondary education in his hometown before proceeding to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria were he studied law to get an LL.B. He further went to Nigerian law school where he was fully inducted as a lawyer.
BEFORE FAME
As a lawyer, businessman, and politician, Abubakar Haruna served as a legal adviser to the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) during the Nigerian Second Republic. He played a vital role in establishing Lafiyan Barebari as the capital of Nasarawa State. Additionally, he was instrumental in reviving the use of the Kanuri language in the Lafia Kingdom, collaborating with the governments of Yobe and Borno states, the Borno Emirates Council, and the late Mai Agwai of Lafia. He remains the only native of Kanem-Bornu to have ever held the position of Deputy Senate President.
CAREER
Abubakar Haruna was the Company Secretary and Legal Advisor to Benue Cement Company in Gboko Benue State, and also served as the Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General of Plateau State. He was elected Senator for the Nasarawa South constituency of Nasarawa State, Nigeria in 1999. After joining the Senate in June 1999, he was appointed to various committees: Selection (where he served as vice chairman), Senate Services, Petroleum, Judiciary, Economic Affairs, and Local & Foreign Debts.
In the same year, he was also appointed as Deputy Senate President. Senator Haruna contested for the governorship of Nasarawa State under the NDP against the incumbent Senator Abdullahi Adamu. He was the running mate to Bagudu Hirse for the positions of governor and deputy governor of Plateau State. He lost the highly contested election and subsequently took his case to the election tribunal. Subsequently, Haruna was appointed Managing Director of the Pipelines and Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC) during the military regime of General Sani Abacha.
FAMILY LIFE
Alhaji Abubakar Haruna lost his father at a young age and was quickly adopted by his young uncle, the only person he grew up knowing as a father: the late Dalhatu Bawa. Alhaji Haruna Abubakar was married to Maryam Abubakar (wife) and had children including Muhammad Auwal, Binta, Sadiq, Musa and others. Haruna Abubakar owns the popular Metro Plaza located in Zakariya Maimalari street, Central Business District. He also owns Amana Suits, a cluster of 3 bedroom bungalows located in Wuse Zone 6 among other businesses. Lastly, Alhaji Abubakar Haruna birthday remembrance date is 6 June.

Abubakar passed away in a London hospital on February 27, 2005, following a protracted illness. His remains were subsequently transported back to Nigeria, where he was laid to rest in Lafia.
