Amina Titilayo Atiku-Abubakar (born Titilayo Albert before marriage change of name; born 6 June 1951) is a Nigerian advocate of women and girl child rights. The first wife of former vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar. As an activist, she founded of Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF). She also played a key role in initiating the private bill that led to the creation of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).
BEFORE FAME
She was a lecturer at Kaduna State Polytechnic. While in Rome to further her education in 1986 and 1987, she noticed many Nigerian girls on the streets. After investigating, she discovered that many of these girls were working as prostitutes for their madams, often without receiving any payment.
CAREER
Amina Titi Abubakar began advocating to end forced prostitution and human trafficking In 1999, after her husband Atiku Abubakar became Nigeria’s vice president. She founded the Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF) and sponsored a private bill advocating for strict punishments for traffickers and the establishment of a federal agency. This led to the creation of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, tasked with combating human trafficking in Nigeria. Additionally, she ran educational courses focused on welcoming and rehabilitating girls repatriated from various countries back to Nigeria.
FAMILY LIFE
Titilayo Albert was born into a Christian Yoruba family from Ilesa, Osun State, and was raised in Lagos. Her birthday date is 6 June. She completed her primary education in Lafiaji, Lagos, and then went to St. Mary’s in Iwo, Osun State for her secondary education, finishing in 1969. In 1971, she married Atiku Abubakar (who was 25yo then), who was a young customs officer at the time at the Ikoyi registry in Lagos. Her family initially opposed the marriage.
She has four children; Fatima, Adamu, Halima and Aminu Abubakar. In addition to English, she is fluent in both Yoruba and Hausa. Titilayo converted from Christianity to Islam.
