ABOUT
Usman Umar Kibiya OON mni, born on 12 June 1949, is the Sarkin Kibiya of Kibiya Local Government Area in Kano State. He ascended to this traditional title on 26 May 2007, following the passing of the previous Sarkin Kibiya, Alhaji Ado Abdullahi Kibiya.
Usman Umar has a distinguished career in the Nigeria Immigration Service, where he served for thirty years and rose to the position of Acting Comptroller General before retiring in January 2000. After his retirement, he ventured into business and politics. In 2003, he ran for the office of Senator representing the Kano South senatorial district and was elected to the Nigerian National Assembly in May 2003 under the platform of the ANPP.

Usman Umar Kibiya OON mni, attended Kibiya Junior Primary School (1955-1958) and Rano Senior Primary School, where he earned his First School Leaving Certificate in 1962. He furthered his education at Birnin Kudu Government Secondary School (1963-1967) and obtained a Diploma in Law from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in 1970. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Maryland, College Park (1977-1980) and attended the Royal Institute of Public Administration, London, in 1975. In 1993, he attended the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru, Jos.
He got his first job at the Nigeria Immigration Service in July 1970 as an Immigration Officer, Sen U. K. Umar held various strategic positions, including Immigration Attaché at the Nigeria Embassy in Washington, DC, Comptroller of Immigration at Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos, Deputy Director of Administration and Finance at Headquarters in Abuja, DCG of Immigration Investigation Directorate, and DCG of Immigration Administration and Finance. He was appointed Acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service in July 1999, where he played a significant role in the transformation of the service until his retirement in January 2000.
CAREER
Sen U. K. Umar was elected to the Nigerian Senate in May 2003, representing the Kano South Senatorial District, which includes the Local Government Areas of Albasu, Bebeji, Bunkure, Doguwa, Gaya, Kiru, Rano, Takai, Ajingi, Rogo, Kibiya, Tudun Wada, Garko, Wudil, and Sumaila. During his tenure, he was an active participant in debates and co-sponsored several motions.
From May 2003 to 2007, he served as the Senate Deputy Minority Leader. Sen U. K. Umar held various committee positions, including Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs and Youth Development, and membership in committees on Security and Intelligence, Labour and Productivity, Information, Internal Affairs, States and Local Government Affairs, and Finance.
In addition to his political career, Usman Kibiya Umar is a distinguished member of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (mni). He serves as the chairman and CEO of Lanyo Group of Companies and is a director at IEI Anchor Pension Managers Limited. He also holds leadership roles as chairman of the Muslim Community Center, chairman of the Abuja Center for Islamic Propagation (CIP), and member of the Kano State University of Technology Council. He is involved in the National Association of Micro Finance Banks, both in the North West and nationally.
Umar’s contributions to sports include serving as the president of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) from 1989 to 2000 and being a member of the Nigeria Olympic Committee from 1984 to 2000. He was also the chairman of the Kano State College of Education from 2001 to 2003.
