Very Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu was born on June 12, 1945. He served as the governor of Benue State, Nigeria, starting from January 2, 1992. As at then, he was elected under the Social Democratic Party (SDP). However, his tenure ended abruptly due to a military coup in November 1993, led by General Sani Abacha, who assumed power. Rev. Fr. BEFORE FAME
Moses Adasu Orshio began his early education at St. James Junior Seminary Keffi (1966-1968) and St. Augustine’s Major Seminary, Jos, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Divinity (1969-1972). He furthered his education in the United States, obtaining an M.A. from St. John’s University, New York City (1975-1976) and a Masters of Religious Education from the Catholic University of America, Washington DC (1976-1978).
Fr. Adasu was 26 years old when he became a priest. Shortly after his ordination, he took up a teaching appointment with Government Teachers College, Jos, Plateau State. He was the 2nd Class of Tiv indigenous priests in the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi. After a series of Pastoral works he left for further studies.
Adasu served as a Senior Inspector of Education at the Benue State Ministry of Education and taught in various secondary schools and colleges, including in Jos, Otukpo, Adikpo, Akwanga, and Katsina-Ala. He held several administrative and advisory roles, such as being a member of the Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, the Benue State Prerogative of Mercy, and the Advisory Council of the Episcopal Commission on African Tradition Religion. He also served as the Chairman of the Presbyteral Council, Dean of Makurdi Deanery, and Vicar-General of the Diocese of Makurdi.
CAREER
Very Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu was elected the second Executive Governor of Benue State on January 2, 1992. During his two-year term, he made significant contributions to the state, including founding Benue State University on December 27, 1991, and upgrading the College of Education in Oju. He also initiated the Tarka Foundation, which was launched on July 2, 1992, in honor of Senator Joseph Sarwuan Tarka. The foundation includes facilities such as an art gallery, conference rooms, and recreational centers.
Adasu believed in the integrity of politics, stating, “I am in politics to baptize politics and make it pure.” However, his tenure was cut short when General Sani Abacha came to power in November 1993, and he was replaced by Group Captain Joshua Obademi.
In the Fourth Republic, Adasu was appointed a member of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in January 2001 but resigned in June 2002 to reenter politics. Running under the Alliance for Democracy (AD) party, he contested the gubernatorial elections in April 2003 but was unsuccessful. He later headed one of the National Convention Committees for the AD in September 2004.
