Pastor Eyo Edet Okon, affectionately known as Akamba Ete (Great Papa), was a prominent Nigerian Christian clergyman and minister. Serving as the first indigenous President and the third overall National President of The Apostolic Church Nigeria, he held this esteemed position until his passing in 2010.
BEFORE FAME
Eyo Edet Okon, born on 10 June 1914 in Creek Town, Cross River State, was the fifth son and ninth child of Chief Edet Okon Itam and Madam Aya Uda Okon Itam. After completing his Standard Six Certificate at The Church of Scotland Mission School in 1929, he pursued a teaching career, inspired by his elder brother, Essien Edet Okon. Eyo furthered his education by studying Theology at The Apostolic Church Bible College in Great Britain during the 1950s, followed by a Diploma in Theology from The Apostolic Bible College in Obot Idim, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State in 1962.
CAREER
Throughout his lifetime, this clergyman received numerous honors, due to his significant contributions and impact. The important recognition he had was a state honor and award presented in October 2000 by Dr. Donald Duke, then the governor of Cross River State, recognizing his patriotic service as a pastor, counselor, teacher, philanthropist, and influential spiritual leader in Cross River State and Akwa Ibom States.
Additionally, he was honored as the pioneer Evangelist and father of The Apostolic Church in the Republic of Cameroon and received recognition from The Apostolic Church International Council in Bradford, Britain, in 1981. Further acknowledgments included tribute from Cross River State Students in the United States of America, acknowledgment by The Apostolic Church United States of America (TACUSA), and the title of “Hero of Faith” bestowed by the Global Prayer Force in November 2008. He also received acknowledgment from the International Chaplains Corps (Intercorps) in 2009 for his remarkable contributions.
FAMILY LIFE
In 1937, Eyo Okon got married into matrimony with the late Deaconess Nyong Okpo Mfon, a union that lasted until her passing on 7th March 1985. Throughout his life, he cherished their bond deeply, and her loss deeply affected him. Following her passing, he remained a widower until his own demise (28 September 2010), finding solace in memories of their enduring love and companionship. Their union symbolized not just a marital relationship but also a partnership built on shared values, mutual respect, and undeniable support for each other’s life work. Though parted by death, their bond continued to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.
Eyo’s final days were marked by a profound sense of purpose and spiritual significance. He confided in his immediate family members about five pivotal meetings he believed he would conduct, emphasizing the need for thorough preparation. Determined to stay focused, he declined visitors to ensure nothing would distract him from these significant gatherings. However, on 24th September 2010, he began to exhibit signs of weakness, signaling the approaching end of his earthly journey. Four days later, on 28th September 2010, Eyo peacefully passed away at his residence in Calabar, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering faith, dedication, and spiritual insight.
