Hogan “Kid” Bassey MBE (lived from 3 June 1932 – 26 January 1998) was a Nigerian-British boxer. His real name is Okon Asuquo Bassey and was born on the banks of the Cross River, Creek Town, Calabar, Nigeria. He relocated to the UK and became a naturalised British citizen. He was the first man of Nigerian descent to become a world boxing champion after winning a championship match in United Kingdom.
BEFORE FAME
Bassey was a simple Nigeria living among his tribesmen in Cross River state before moving to Lagos for greener pastures after the Nigeria civil war. He engaged in petty trade and also worked as an artisan before joining his friends for boxing training that earned his different boxing titles.
CAREER
He took the name Kid Bassey when he turned professional as a boxer. His first boxing match of records is with Jimmy Brown at the African Tennis Club, Lagos. He won his first match (Nigerian Flyweight Title) against against Dick Turpin in Lagos Nigeria before moving to other countries. In his career, he won 68 boxing matches, lost 13 match and 4 draws. He was managed by and trained by George Biddles and Jimmy August. While in Nigeria, he won the West African Bantamweight Title, Nigerian Bantamweight Title, Nigerian Bantamweight Title, West African Flyweight Title and Nigerian Flyweight Title.
FAMILY LIFE
Hogan “Kid” Bassey was married to Mary Madgalene and Maria Williams; his wives. They gave birth to two children Hogan jnr, and Richard Hogan. After his boxing career, Bassey was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) “for services to sport in the Eastern Region, Nigeria”. Bassey went on to become a coach in Nigeria. Hogan “Kid” Bassey MBE’s birthday remembrance date is 3 June and he died on 26 January 1998 at his home in Apapa, Lagos Nigeria.
